tried to show that beef was safe by encouraging his 4-year-old child to eat a
hamburger in front of the cameras, has died from the human form of "mad cow"
disease.

Elizabeth Smith, 23, a student from St Margaret South Elmham, Suffolk, died
from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) on October 4, three years after
becoming ill.
세인트 마가렛 사우스 엘햄에 살던 23살의 엘리자베스 스미스양은 광우병 발병 후 3년 후 인 10월 4일 크루즈펠트-야콥 병으로 죽었다.
Her father, Roger Smith, a retired vicar, said today that his own daughter
had rarely eaten burgers as a child and had enjoyed a normal, healthy diet.
그녀의 아버지 로저 스미스는 딸이 어렸을 때 햄버거를 먹은 적이 거의 없으며 평범한 건강식을 즐겨했다고 오늘 밝혔다.
“I think her [Elizabeth’s] average consumption of burgers was probably about
1 per cent of the national average,” Mr Smith said.

“If you live in the depths of the countryside, like Elizabeth did, there
aren’t burger bars everywhere so she hardly ate any. “It may be nothing to do with beef burgers. If people knew precisely where

Mr Smith said Mr Gummer, who encouraged his daughter Cordelia to eat a burger
in front of TV cameras in 1990 in order to demonstrate that humans were at no
danger from mad cow disease, was a personal friend.

Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith said his daughter was first diagnosed with vCJD in 2005.

He said Miss Smith, who was reading geography at Birmingham University,
needed round-the-clock care as the disease took hold.
버밍햄 대학에서 지리학을 공부하던 엘리자베스는 광우병이 발병하며 24시간 병수발을 필요로 했다고 전한다.
“She first became ill in August 2004 but it wasn’t diagnosed for another
seven months. She was able to stay at university until March 2005,” he said.
"2004년 8월에 처음으로 아프기 시작했는데 그 후 7개월 후에야 광우병 판정이 났죠. 2005년 3월까지 대학에 계속 있었어요"
“It took so long to get diagnosed because the symptoms are so vague - it
could have been various other things in the early stages. There is no blood test
and no 100 per cent certain test until after death.
"병명을 알기까지 너무나 오래 걸렸어요. 증상이 확실하지 않기 때문입니다. 초기에는 어떤 병인지 알 수 없어요. 피검사로 알수 있는 것도 아니고 죽기 전까지는 100프로 확신할 수 있는 테스트가 존재하지 않습니다.
“Initially the symptoms can be confused with depression. Elizabeth wasn’t
depressed but she had numbness in her face and we thought it was MS (multiple
sclerosis).
"초기 증상은 우울증으로 간주될 수도 있어요. 엘리자베스는 우울증이 있진 않았지만 얼굴근육의 마비증상이 있어서 우리는 다발성경화증인줄 알았어요."
“Then she started having short-term memory loss but because her brain was
young she was able to compensate, which is why she was able to carry on at
university.
"그러다가 단기기억상실증이 나타났어요. 그렇지만 아직 어렸기 때문에 단기기억상실을 극복하고대학 생활을 계속 할 수 있었죠."
“However, by the time she came home she found that she had trouble swallowing
and then couldn’t swallow at all so for the last two-and-a-half years she was
fitted with a gastro-tube.
"그렇지만 집에 돌아왔을 ㅤㄸㅒㅤ 엘리자베스는 삼키는 걸 어려워하기 시작했어요. 그러다가 지난 2년 반동안에는 아예 아무것도 삼킬 수 없어 튜브를 넣고 살아야 했어요.
“After that the disease was remorseless in the way that it killed her off.
그 후 그 병은 가차없이 제 딸을 죽여갔죠.
“By August 2005 she was a very, very sick person. She was unable to walk for
the last two years of her life and couldn’t speak or smile.
2005년 8월쯤에는 아주, 아주 아프게 됐어요. 죽기 전 2년 동안은 걷거나 말하거나 미소도 지을 수 없었죠.
“She had to be cared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She was more
helpless for those last two years than when she was born - at least then she
could move her arms and cry but by the end she couldn’t even do that.”
365일 내내 24시간동안 간병이 필요했어요. 태어났을 때보다 지난 2년동안 엘리자베스는 더 큰 도움이 필요했죠. 갓난아기들도 팔을 움직이거나 울 수는 있는데 엘리자베스는 그것조차 할 수 없었거든요.
Mr Smith said his daughter began a degree course in 2002 after gaining
A-Levels in biology, English, geography and chemistry at Leiston High School in
Leiston, Suffolk.
스미스씨는 딸이 레스튼 고등학교에서 생물, 영어, 지리, 화학에서 A를 받은 후 2002년 대학생활을 시작했다고 한다.
His wife Molly said: “Elizabeth was clever, bright and intelligent. If she
had been able to do her final exams she would have got a very good degree.
스미스씨의 부인인 몰리씨는 "엘리자베스는 영리하고 똑똑하고 지적이였어요. 끝까지 학교를 다닐 수 있었더라면 정말 훌륭한 성적으로 졸업했을꺼에요" 라고 말했다.
“She wanted to do primary school teaching and had a place on a post-graduate
training course at Birmingham - she actually passed that interview when she was
three or four months into the disease.
초등학교 교사가 되고 싶어했어요. 버밍햄대학에서 졸업후 직업훈련계획도 잡혀있었거든요. 광우병 발병후 3,4개월 후에 그 면접을 통과했었어요.
“She had a very active life and loved being outdoors. She was good at sports
and enjoyed running, while she also liked to visit Minsmere bird reserve.”
"활동적으로 생활했고 야외활동을 사랑했어요. 스포츠에 뛰어났고 뛰는 것을 좋아했죠. 민스미어 새 보존터를 방문하는 것도 좋아했죠"
Mr Smith, vicar of Mendham and Metfield in Suffolk from 1978 until 1991,
said: “We don’t want to scare people because it is an extremely rare disease.
Not everyone is going to die from it.
1978년부터 1991년까지 멘댐과 멘필드의 목사였던 스미스씨는 "사람들을 무섭게 하고 싶진 않아요. 희귀한 병이라 모든 사람이 다 광우병으로 죽지는 않을꺼에요" (그도 그럴 것이 영국 사람은 우리나라사람보다 광우병에 걸릴 확률이 1/3정도로 낮다)
“In fact I would tell people to worry more about their driving than getting
CJD.”

He said his daughter’s funeral would take place at the Parish Church of St
John the Baptist, Metfield, tomorrow.
Mr and Mrs Smith also have a son, Andrew, 39.
